I have a ps3 slim(initially 120gig) but after some time, I bought a 500gig hdd for it. I want to put loads of music and videos into it but the transfer rate on ps3 is damn slow. My question is that if i just connect it to desktop internally first, transfer all the data, and then reconnect it to my ps3, will it ask for formatting again(as it did when i first installed my new 500 gig hdd)

Solution
The PS3 uses a proprietary format which PC's don't recognize. Unfortunately you are stuck transferring via USB. As another option, you can install a media server on your PC and just stream music and videos to the PS3. When I first installed windows 7 which came with windows media player 11, my PS3 automatically saw my PC as a media server. There are some settings in windows media server thast may need changed for the PS3 to see it if your PS3 can't already see the PC. The media server should show up in the ps3 crossbar under music/video. There are also free 3rd party media servers you can install

Thnx for the info, but I already know about the media server and I use it sometimes. What I want is to store my media files permanently to ps3.

Well, as stated, the internal PS3 drive uses a proprietary format which can't be read by pc's. However, you may be able to hang a USB external drive to the system and have it read off there. The only external drive format the PS3 understands is FAT32 which will limit your hard drive size to 2TB (not 100% sure on this one) and a 4 gig file size limit (100% sure of this).

Windows doesn't allow you to make large FAT32 partitions so you need to use a 3rd party formatter. I've used this one before successfully.

Other than this option, you would have to do a slow USB transfer to the ps3's internal drive.
