I'm running the vga from my monitor to an adapter and putting that into my gtx 670 graphics card, it shows no display and sometimes causes the card to crash?

Active adapters like that typically only support a list of specific resolutions and refresh rates. What's your screen resolution? Is it set in windows? Is it supported by your adapter?

You plug the vga into it and the other end has a hdmi connector. Similarly to this:

well yeah, the key word in that one is the 'active' part, there have been cheap non-functional passive ones around that dont do anything, but hey it's only $1.99. :p
