almost 2 year ago I built my first system thanks to help here and I am looking to plan another to help me be more productive in my business.

I use a software called Chief Architect to design new home and remodeling projects. It has it's own built in raytracing system, and raytracing realistic images is the bottleneck of my workflow.

According to the software company, it will make use of multiple cores, as many as available, speeding up the processing time. I am currently running an i7 2600k overclocked to 4.7 ghz.

I want my next build to be a dual processor set up, but I was wondering if dual i7 would be better than dual zeons. I have not set a budget, as I have to plan, determine the cost, and then budget for it in my business.

The machine would be used for this program only, have 1 ssd, and decent graphics card.

Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated, as I want to have this in place in the next 4-6 months.

This is the only one that I am aware of except for an Intel board that only runs Xeon as well. Although it is a socket 1366, it will not run the 1st gen i7's.

I used to used cheif architect as well in highschool for my class. Nice program. What version do you use? What gpu are you using? I'd say a gpu upgrade would be a better option then addind another cpu since the gpu is what really should be doing most of the work.

how much memory do you have as well?

just saw this on their site.....

Ray traces and artistic rendering techniques are performed by the CPU and not the video card.

Ray Trace Rendering and Artistic Rendering Techniques (Watercolor, Line Drawing) are highly parallel tasks that are performed by your system CPU not your video card. The number of processor cores available is the most important factor in improving the speed of ray tracing and artistic rendering. Memory and CPU speed are also factors that can contribute to improved performance.

one thing i don't get is why, why use the cpu over the gpu, most ray tracing programs like after affects etc you can set it to use the gpu over the cpu for these tasks

I believe the actual cores perform better than virtual in this instance, but I have asked the software support to confirm. I thought I saw somewhere that dual i7's were possible.

I am using Chief X5, overclocked i7 (4 core) dual gtx 580's, and a ssd. The new raytracer usies strictly cpu processing power now, and not gpu.

thanks!

that was a bad move on their end, a gpu is far more powerful than a cpu.
