My 4-month-old Windows 8 computer won't boot anymore. I'm trying to back up the files on the hard drive before I send it in to get it fixed, so I've hooked it up to my old xp computer via sata port. But when I click on the D drive, the only things on it are a shortcut to My Computer, and a padlock icon that says recovery; none of my documents/files show up. I need to back these files up somehow so I don't lose them.

Solution

If you go to disk management, do you see the drive there with partition info? You may need to assign the other partition drive letters. Seems like you are only seeing the recovery partition. Unless the reason your new computer won't boot is because of a drive issue which is causing the files not to show up.
