then i bought a MAC... nothing was working.. i put all my mac files on the external hard drive, DELETED EVERYTHING OFF THE COMPUTER.. then realized that i couldn't get it back of the hard drive b/c of format...

SO, now i want to reformat the hard drive.. its asking me to ERASE in order to format.. my question is...

will i loose all the WINDOW FILES that i have already put on this hard drive if i reformat it to work on a mac

thanks for the help!

you can install an ntfs reader program, like ntfs3g, into the mac and read the files off the external. then you can format it for mac and write them back. If you need the external to work with mac & windows format it as exFat. if you need it to work with other things as well fat32 would probably be best but it limits you to 2tb toal and 4gb max file size. If the external is needed for Time Machine then you have no choice but the HSF+ format (aka: Mac Extended)
