Hello,

I want to overclock my old rig to as high and stable as I can go with the hardware I've got, never done any type of overclocking though so I thought I'm better off asking here first, I do not want to break anything.

CPU: Q9550 (4x 2.83 ghz, fsb 8.5x333)
Mobo: Asus P5K-SE (1600 FSB)
RAM: 2x Kingston DDR2-800 2GB (kvr800d2n5/2g), 2x Super talent DDR2-800 2GB (t800ux4gc5)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper TX3 Evo (cheap cooler I picked up, no idea how it performs yet)
GPU: Radeon HD 7750

Core temps are between 35-45c idle

How far can I overclock with air cooling? I was thinking of 3.8ghz as I read a lot of people got that stable on air cooling.

I've read a lot about overclocking but I'm too chicken to go at it alone, a lot of things I do not understand yet.. such as when to boost your voltage or when and how to overclock RAM.. I do understand how FSB and multiplier works though.

Would appreciate if someone could help me, thank you.

Alright I've overclocked my Q9550 from 2.8 to 3.4ghz without touching any of the voltage settings or RAM.
Been playing a game for a good hour with temperatures stable at 55c, RAM = 1:1 ratio..

I am satisfied but I'd like to know how much higher I can go and I might need additional help, I've read a lot about overclocking but in the end.. it's confusing to me what or what not to do.

I've read that Q9550 at 70c on full load is acceptable, which makes me think with the current cooling I have I can go atleast to 3.6ghz but I don't know how to configure the RAM properly or when to add more voltage. Anyone?

Just saw that you're running DDR2 memory... sorry about the oversight

Set your front side bus to 437 Mhz, ratio maxed at 8.5.
Dram frequency at 546mhz FSB to DRAM ratio 4:5 clocks at 11:11:11:28 Command rate 2T. Voltage at 1.65 [ddr3, which is what i'm running on my p5e3 x38 chipset board]
This will give you a stable, relatively cool running 3714 MHz CPU speed with a rated FSB (the most significant factor in your computer's throughput) of 1748MHz.
