Dell Laptop XPS M1530 running Vista. Screen suddenly got covered with a sprinkling of multi coloured dots. Control/Alt/delete totally unresponsive. I crashed the computer, it seems to reboot (I get the little Windows start-up tune) but no screen visible. Video card crashed? Can I replace it if that's the problem, or should I just get a new computer?

The video card is a part of the motherboard. It can not be swapped.

You can try safe mode(if you can even see that far). You may also be able to attempt to connect an external screen, but overall it DOES sound like the card has up and died.

try to connect the laptop to a screen or a monitor, if it shows what your computer is supposd to show then its the gpu that its faulty, if it doesnt work see if the connection between the laptop and the laptop's monitor is ok, but that requires experience, like, laptop dissasembling experience, you'll probably have to dissassemble the hole laptop to get to that connection, but if the connection is alright than its the laptop's monitor, youll have to buy a new one.
im sorry for my bad english and explanation, im terrible at explaining things xD

Thanks for that. Since yesterday everything seems to have gotten back to normal. The computer eventually started up. I ran the PC Doctor tests (Dell supplied) on the graphics card and everything passed!

Perhaps it's got something to do with the Dell Media Direct update that was installed a few days ago? Today Media Direct openned randomly on my screen, perhaps 2 or 3 days since it updated?!!

Anyway it all seems back to normal today, perhaps I can put off buying another computer for a while longer yet!

Thanks,

Demetri
