New Mobo Faulty? Or is it the new GFX?

Hey everyone, thanks for reading!

So I've been out getting myself a new mobo (990FX Extreme3) and a new GFX (XFX R7870 Double Edition- 2GB) but I'm having some maaajor issues with 'em.

I started out, two days ago, popping everything together and nothing happened on the screen when I powered it up. I asked a guy I know to help me out, via Skype, and he's been sending me drivers, had me do chkdsk, everything he could think of and nothing worked. I figured out that I had to go into the BIOS and change the preferred GPU from PCI-E to regular PCI for the PC to boot, getting me all the way into Windows. I thought my troubles had passed and that I could finally get going with installing all the games again.

Nah, it's never that simple is it?

It froze while downloading a game, just completely froze up and the only thing that worked was hitting the Power-Up button again, forcing it to shut down. I decided to see if maybe, just maybe, it'd go better with my old GFX (HD4870.. I know) but it only made it as far as getting on the desktop before freezing up again. No BSoD, no sounds, just good ol' frustrating nothing but freezing.

Then I decided to test the GFX on my old mobo, a almost ancient M4a78t-e, but with no luck. The fans went fine, on both the mobo and the gfx but nothing happend on either of my screens.

I've been advised that I should RMA the GFX but I find it unlogical that it'd be the only part under the weather right now, seeing that the old GFX didn't work with the new mobo either.

Hope someone in here can help me, this is driving me (and my wife who listens to the random rants here and there) crazy...

Cheers,
AznETick

***UPDATE***

Just tested the gpu in a completly different PC, it's working perfectly... So it's not the GPU! RMA the mobo perhaps?

What is the make and model of your PSU and how old is it?
I'll suggest running SeaTools (or other hard drive diagnostics tool - most hard drive manufacturers supply their own) and seeing if any errors or problems are reported
If nothing from hard drive diagnostics, I'll also suggest running MemTest86 to test the ram

It's a Thermaltake Toughpower 700W, looking in the BIOS it's actually running a bit low. 11.75v on the 12v check. It's been running 2x 4870s for a good long while, 4-5 years.

I've tested two different HDDs with clean Win7s on 'em, 6 differen 4gig rams just to try and rule out faulty ram/hdds.

Could it be something as simple as a old PSU?

Okay, so I've tested with the Mrs. now and her PSU carried it as far as into the BIOS where it decided my HDDs weren't anywhere to see. Much fiddling was done and honestly, after 3 whole days of switching and testing and almost being there and then a slap to the face, I don't precisely recall what I went through...

But I managed to make it boot into Windows now, on my old HDD... But it will freeze or turn off, I'm 100% sure of it... Now that I think about it, I moved the GPU to another PCI-E socket, that seemed to do the trick there atleast!
