you need to find out which exact models. I3's are generally entry level gaming CPU's. They ar mostly dual core, and some have hyper threading. The quad core, depending on which architecture will yield better performance, specially as games are getting to the point where they require quad cores as default for good performance. The 560ti isn't a bad card, and I have one myself. It will be good up to 1080p providing you have a decent CPU to drive it.
Again, knowing the exact model of the CPU's makes all the difference for giving you a final answer.

Edit: ir could be your quad is a Q8300/9300 which is socket 775. It's old but not obsolete. If the I3 was a 2120 or above, Id prob take that over the older quad. But it's a borderline call. The newer architecture of the I3 will be better than the four old Yorkfield cores.

like I said, its hard to tell you the answer without the models. Get the details from your buddy, and PM me, and I can tell you, or just post back here the details.

I can't make the recommendation, because some Older quadcores are better than modern dual cores. So to give you the right answer you need more info about the systems you potentially buying.

It's a tough call but I would take more cores over newer architecture/hyperthreading

My Q6600 @ 3.6 puts a beating on my i3 3220 it's actually awful, but as all the other say we actually need to know what options you have.

Sounds like a core 2 q8300 and i3-2100T

It might be better to go with the newer stuff even if it offers less performance as you would still have the option to upgrade.

The q8300 however would offer the chance to overclock to 3.2 or so and it would be a much better gaming cpu but it's old now and really kind of a waste.
