Any help is appreciated.

Apu isn't needed. Back in the day before igpu were on cpus, they were on mobos and could hybrid with discrete similar like today. But you still need the same generation and family for any type of crossfire and the 4250 needs 3000 or 4000 series. Also correcting the "only done with older models" isn't true at all, it applies to any apu(or cpu in the op situation) and lower end gpus.
