HTPC = home theater PC. Possibly you just mean something in a small case.

Anyway...what hardware depends on traffic. How many users? Just a family? Then you really, really don't need anything powerful. I have a linux based firewall box, running untangle, running on a 7 year old AMD Sempron based PC. 20GB hard drive, 1GB RAM (i think).

Except for a reinstall two weeks ago, it has been running 24/7 for 4+ years. It cost me $50 on craigslist.

If you're just doing it for home use then anything will work. I suppose if you wanted to be space efficient you could just get a Zotac ZBOX and use two USB dongles, one to your ISP and one to your switch, or just one provided you use the wifi as a wireless router. There are also HTPC systems such as

which already come with two ethernet ports and expansion cards for more. Just depends on what you want and are willing to spend.

Yes I meant a small case instead of htpc and it's indead only for a family. So I don't need high specs. I want to keep the costs to a minimum but I do prefer it running on the latest hardware (intel).

Thx for the replies.

Anything with 2 or more NICs will work.
