I have a Sager laptop. It has a dvi hookup on the back. So I bought a dvi male to hdmi female to work on my hdtv. The video park works well. I know you can't get sound out of the dvi. So I got a hookup in the back. It's input 6 with aditional rca input for sound. I got a rca with a headphone 3.5 mm jack to feed the sound from my laptop to my hdtv. It works when I don't have the hdmi plugged in, but as soon as I plug it in, nothing. I get the picture but no sound.

I have an old sony bravia model no. kdl-46s2010. I read the manual and it says this: "If the equipment has a DVI connector and not an HDMI connector, connect the DVI connector to the HDMI IN (with HDMI-to-DVI cable or adapter) connector, and connect the audio jacks to the AUDIO IN (L/R) jacks of HDMI IN. (DVI connector is for video signal only)"

So there is obiviously a way to do it. I looked in the menu to see if you have to manually set it. I could not find anything.

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? It has a Nividia 8800 graphics card, Is there anything I need to turn off? I'm really at a lose here. I searched on the internet for solutions. I found some people having the same problem, but never could find a solution.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

i've got an old kdlv3000 and a dvi to hdmi cable works perfectly fine for transporting audio. i in fact still use a dvi to hdmi for pushing video and audio to my receiver when i upgraded from the tv speakers to a 5.1 setup.

dvi CAN carry audio if your video card supports it. quite a few older cards support it however being a laptop the case could be different.

be aware that some dvi to hdmi cables do not carry sound. i think you need a dvi-d interface and i've heard that some cables do not work (probably an older style)

my thoughts would be that the L/R input jacks are tied to a certain input. either that or you need to specify which input to use it with in the tv menu.

try unplugging everything but the dvi to hdmi cable. does your...

try unplugging everything but the dvi to hdmi cable. does your laptop recognize the tv in devices? in sound properties is the tv selected as the default audio device? also make sure you have the newest drivers available.

let us know what you find out.

I don't think my graphic card supports audio through the dvi. I think I have a GeForce 8800M GTX card. I just don't really understand why it won't work. I have another sony bravia (a lot newer model) I set it up the same way accept it has a 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack input. It didn't work at first, but I went to the tv's menu and switched to a/v input. Now it works fine.

The other bravia I thought for sure it would work too. It kind of makes me want to figure it out. I guess if I don't. I can always get a vga to hdmi. I can pick one up on ebay for about $4. I know this will work because my other laptop has a vga and it works great. I get the sound from a 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack. Thanks for your suggestions...
