I live in a two story house and only average three bars with wireless in my bedroom, with my bandwidth occasionally cutting out all together. I thought it was my wireless adapter for my PC so I upgraded to a Netgear n900 dual band adapter and noticed increased download speeds, but I am still only at three bars with the same reliability issues. I decided to take a look at the router that I haven't looked at in a long time and noticed that it was not as good of one as I thought, the router being a cheap Belkin N150. My max budget is $100 and I am looking for reliability first.

It is probably not the wireless adapter or router -- N does not do a good job of whole house two story wireless usually.

The three basic choices are run a single Ethernet cable and attach an AP upstairs, use a pair of 500Mpbs powerline adapters to attach an AP upstairs, spend some $$ and use a pair of ASUS AC routers, one as the primary router and the other upstairs as in media bridge mode.

OR...

Use a wireless repeater, strategically placed between floors. Some are very cheap and can be used as a portable repeater or standalone AP
