I am new to overclocking, however have done a lot of research!
I can't seem to get my system to boot on anything above 4.2ghz, even though my temps are still reading fairly low (37 idol on 1.3v) As soon as I go above 4.2 it blue screens, and I am not really keen on going above 1.3v, Ram is on 1688

What is the primary cause of a "failed" overclock? too high heat?
It's mostly a blue screen I get, or just reboots itself.

Not really sure if there's anything else I can try, or to admit defeat!

Sometimes, you may need to disable/enable other things like c-state, virtualization etc (not sure what for the 4770k). that really helps with the OC. have you tried any?

Most of the guides I've seen say unlike the previous generations, haswell it makes no difference to disable the things you mentioned!

Willing to give it a go though!

oh really? has anyone had success getting higher than 4.2 on 1.3v? maybe go a small increment higher (voltage) and see what you get. increasing voltage should be fine as long as your cpu is cool (and you stay in acceptable limits).

what i would do is make sure your cpu input voltage is 1.8v to 1.85v just don't mistake this for cpu core voltage 1.3v is loads for 4.2ghz what i noticed is asus seem to have cpu input voltage on auto at 1.71v and thats what caused me great distress thinking i got a bad chip too but on investigation found the cpu input voltage should be 1.8v at stock and some people claim to run it at as high as 2v (i have not tried this voltage that high) to stabilize overclocks but for me 1.85v and 1.27v core voltage got my i5 4670k to 4.4ghz and your i7 has a better reputation for overclocking
