Hi guys, I have decided to upgrade my current PC build (which is about 3-4 years old now and gradually slowing down), to an FX-8350 setup for current and upcoming game releases.
[OLD] Current Specs:
- AMD Athlon Duo 5400+ 2.80Ghz
- 2GB Memory
- Foxconn AM2+ A6VMX2-X M.B.
- Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT 512mb
- Logisys 575w SLI Ready P.S. (Reusing)
- Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler (Reusing)
- 250GB HD (Reusing)
- DVD-Rom Drive (Reusing)
- XION Axp 100 (Reusing)
I've been using this setup for about 3-4 years now for web browsing mostly, BF:1942, BF:Vietnam, and various Steam games. It was okay but obviously can't handle anything new.
After about a week or two of research, watching reviews, bench tests, AMD vs Invidia, cost comparisons etc., this was a list I came up with for parts...
[NEW] PC Build Specs:
- AMD FX-8350 4.0-4.2 Turbo AM3+ ($179.99 on Newegg.com w/promo code)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113284
- ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 ($179.99 on Newegg.com w/promo code)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131877
- EVGA GTX 760 Superclocked 2GB 256-bit ACX Cooler ($264.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130932
- G.Skill Ripjaws X Series (2x4GB) 1866 (PC3 14900) ($65 w/promo code)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231538
- Logisys 575watt SLI Ready Power Supply (Reusing)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817170017
- Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo Cpu Cooler (Reusing)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099
- Xion Axp 100 Midsize ATX Tower (Reusing)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811208027
- 250GB Standard HD (Reusing)
- DVD-Rom Drive (Reusing)
- Windows 7 Home Professional
What I plan to use this build for:
With the 8350 setup, I'd like to (hopefully) be future proof for at least 3-4 years without any major hardware changes, besides upgrading graphic card(s) to run in SLI, or adding more RAM. I may venture into overclocking the CPU and GPU (further down the road) by a little amount, CPU to possibly 4.5 or so, any higher and would go with a water cooler such as an H-100i.
I'd use it mostly for gaming & web browsing, with a little bit of video editing being captured with an Hauppauge HDPVR2 from my Xbox 360.
My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster T220HD - native 1680x1050 (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2333203,00.asp?tab=Specs if that helps with figuring FPS for resolution,) or my 42" Panasonic Plasma from time to time. I plan on upgrading to a higher res. monitor as prices lower.
Some of the games I plan on running (At 1680x1050, hopefully to max settings if playable at an avg fps):
- Arma 3
- BF3
- BF4
- Bioshock Infinite
- Borderlands 2
- Cyrsis 3 (Possibly)
- Dayz Standalone
- Far Cry 3
- GTAV (If/when released)
I'm sure I'm missing a few, but mostly FPS's and a couple RPG's demanding H.Q. graphics.
Besides that it'd be Google Chrome and Acrosoft Showbiz for now, maybe Sony Vegas Pro but I'd worry about that later.
Just wondering what you guys thought of the layout for what my plan is. Any questions, comments, concerns, or opinions feel free to leave below.
Just an FYI...
- I don't plan on changing from 8350, not a fan boy just feel like trying one of AMD's newer cpu's for the price of only $180 and plan to play Battlefield most of the time over other games.
- I also chose the EVGA 760 for a graphics card because price was in my range, performed well over 660TI and 7950 from what I saw in benchmarks, has some overclocking headroom, and the 3 were all around the same price.
