Overclocking 4670K with Asus Z87 Gryphon

Hey there,

I recently bought a new system and willing to overclock it. I've had enough experience as a former overclocker but would like some tips with this specific cpu and motherboard combo from people who already use the same or similar stuff... (At least people who use Haswell with Asus boards)

Hi. Not sure of what BiOS is in there. I am using an i7 4770k on an ASUS Z87 - Pro Motherboard. It has the UEFI BiOS and OCing is rather straightforward with that. With UEFI, you enter the BiOS ( from the desktopp ) and I think it is four steps, then you sit back and watch as it does it automatically. You can shift to a "Traditional" BiOS and go in an tinker with the Voltages and Bclck and stuff. I went from 3.5 Ghz to 4.6 Ghz with the Auto matic thing and got my memory speed to 2133 Mhz. Probably could have gotten more on the CPU, but the cooling held it down. I know that with a Noctua cooler, I probably could have gotten 4.8 Ghz on the processor.

hmm.. I see. Thanks for your time for answering.

I tried some tweaking by traditional way with the uefi bios. With 1.2V I could only reach 4.20GHZ. With 1.2V and 4.50GHZ I couldnt even start the machine, needed a hard reset. Tried giving it 1.25V to see if i could reach 4.40GHZ, it worked, but then I was held back by temps as you mentioned. So I started to think this is pretty much the limit of this specific CPU, unless I go for a liquid cooler.

With a cooler master hyper 212 evo, if I push 1.25V, core temps easily reach ~95C under stress test. with 1.2V I was around 85C max.

So... I was thinking maybe I am missing some points with this UEFI Bios or maybe the cpu is from a bad batch... Maybe I should go for a rma ?
 
Yeah, you start pushing the voltage it really plays heck with the core temps. You may have gotten a not so good processor in the silicon lottery. I have been seeing quite a few 4.5 Ghz clocks on the i5 4670k. All nice and stable with decent core temps ( 4.8 ghz on the i7 4770k ). From your description, I don't don't know if your missing anything or not. Did you mess with the Bclck or just go with upping the multiplier?

just the multiplier so far. didnt really need to try neither bclk or bclk straps. a

well I got a weird issue though. Whatever frequency or multiplier I set in bios, after I boot in to windows I see the overclocked frequencies for a minute, but then they fall back to stock for a weird reason. I tried couple stress testing utilities, but it does not go higher than the stock frequency 3400mhz (it stays at 34x, weirdly, even though at CPUZ screen the multiplier range is shown as 8x-43x, like I set it in bios 43x). However the manual voltage set stays at the value 1.25V that I dialed in.

So to summarize, whatever multiplier I set, at first minute after boot, the target value is successful, I can see it in CPUZ, task manager (win8) and some other stuff as well, but after a little bit of time, frequency and multiplier sits thight at 3400 and 34x, however the voltage is sitting at the desired value.

Plus, I can turn on and off EIST feature, but even if I turn off Turbo, its turns itself on when cpu multiplier is set manually. Is this normal? I installed the latest BIOS for Gryphon board didnt really change anything...

Am I missing some point?
 


These things are funny. Not at all like the 775 based quad cores. I am showing 100 x 46 in the BiOs and that is what it is OC'd to ( 4.6 Ghz ). CPU - Z shows 100 x 8. ( 800 Mhz ). [shrug] Oddly enough, When I went into CPU -Z and clicked the Memory tab, Everything but the amount of memory was grayed out. Seems like there was no problems with either cpu/mobo or bios or any settings. I was using RealTemp software to keep track of my temperatures and in its settings you can actually enable/disable C-States/EIST/Turbo etc. (while you are in actually Windows). So as you may know, in BIOS if you disable turbo, manually dialed cpu multipliers turns back to default (which is auto) and if you dialed any cpu multiplier Turbo should be always on, if you dial multipliers turbo turns on automatically anways.

So, when I turned off turbo in RealTemp (I actually dont even remember doing so), multipliers got stuck at stock speeds even if they were set in BIOS.
All I needed to do is un-check "disable Turbo" option in Real Temp and VOILA!

Everything is back to normal...

I hope if somebody else is aware of this, wouldnt spend all their weekend like me trying to fix this stupid problem lol...

Yeah. I haven't heard of anyone disabling Turbo, but EIST being enabled can hamper OCing, or so I've heard.
