What to upgrade for better gaming?

Hi all,

I've recently got back into PC gaming and am looking to upgrade. I've been playing things like Dawn of War 2 (old I know) which the frame rate plummets on when there are explosions and things. I'm also playing the new Total War : Rome II and while I know there have been some bugs with that graphically looking to be fixed in an upcoming patch it looks fairly horrendous on my system and gets laggy as well. I'm also wanting to get the new X: Rebirth game coming out towards the end of the year. I'm thinking I might need to buy a new graphics card but am unsure if this is the best approach to take. Here's what I'm running :

Windows 7 64 bit
Intel Core i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20GHz (2 cores)
8GB of RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5570
Primary Resolution : 1980x1080
PSU : Channel Well Technology Model DSAII450S-6
Max combined wattage 450W

My computer is an Advent Centurion Ci 5231

Any ideas of what I should be looking to improve and what to buy? Thanks very much!

that processor is far from horrid. you could throw in a radeon 7770 and get about triple the performance in games. and it would be cheap. any card more powerful than a 7870 would kinda overkill. you would be held back more by CPU even on games that are easy on it.

Thanks both for all your help so far.

The AMD website says that the HD7850 and the HD7770 require a 500W power supply - I don't know anything about PSUs so should I be worried about that? The HD7750 says 400W or greater.

if I'm going to spend the money (say with a top budget of around the £200 mark) I want to make sure that I'm going to see a definite difference and get the best I can but I don't want to wreck my system somehow!

OK so last question is how much difference is there going to be between running the 7770 and the 7850? I'm probably being a bit too eager but I can get a 7770 today from a store nearby but for the 7850 I'd have to order online and wait...
