Hi

I have got a used (gigabyte gtx 280 DDR3 1GB) from an old friend, this GPU has 6 pin & 8 pin connecters on it ,but unfortunatly my Psu has only 1x6 pin Pci-e connecter. :??:

my psu is S-TEK ST-772005 800W

i want to know, if i buy an 8 pin pci-e adapter, will it work with my card? without causing trouble to either of pc or gpu. my psu is 800w which is more than enough for graphic card's power requirement, then why it doesn't has
8 pin connecter..is it not compatible or not designed to run heavy end graphic units ?

*System Specs*
Intel Core i3-2120 3.30ghz
Intel DH67CL
Kingston DDR3 4GB
Hitachi 500 GB
WD 80 GB
9600 gt DDR3 512MB

here is the pictures of my PSU & GPU

The PSU was not designed to run such a power hungry card it's also not a very modern unit: New/er units put more through the 12 volt line/s and less through the 3.3 and 5 volt ones.
You could get a molex/PCI-E adaptor and a 6-to-8-pin adaptor (use the 6-to-8 off the existing 6 pin and the molex/PCI as a straight 6 pin) but I really would not advise it. In my opinion you would be better served with a better quality PSU with the correct connectors for the job.
aim at 500Watts or more from a good maker: Antec, Corsair, Silverstone, Seasonic, OCS, Pc Power and Cooling, Rosewil (capstone series), FSP and avoid cheap 'high output' units-they're cheap for bad reasons.
This is an upmarket choice but 'downmarket is only about $5-10 less:
