I am trying to build a p/c with win7 on a new msi 9900fxa-gd80.
can I load windows on a c drive and add 3 more 1tb and configure them to raid 5 for safe storage of files.

Solution
Yes, you can do that.
Set your SATA ports to RAID mode, connect your SSD, and install your O/S.
Your SSD will automatically default to AHCI mode since it is not part of an actual RAID array.
After your O/S is installed you can then shut down, connect your HDDs, and create your RAID-5 array.

Also FYI, RAID is not backup, it is redundancy.
I personally would use those 1TB drives separately as backup drives. That way I would have copies of my data on separate drives.

As Dereck47 already said, you can run a raid5 config, but i don't recommend that for save file storage. It is still a software raid, highly dependent on the chipset/mobo and the driver and you should always have an exact same drive on hand, to rebuild the array, if it fails. Get two 2TB disks instead and sync them frequently. The free SyncToy2.1 from Microsoft does a good job on that.
