TERA mmo - AMD CPU upgrade (or change?)

Hi!

I just returned to playing TERA after a long break and I have to say, I'm disappointed in the relationship of my current PC and TERA.

I have a Phenom II X4 955 BE which isn't a top CPU in general, but the amount it struggles with TERA is beyond my darkest nightmares.
I know it's the CPU, because I have a HD6870 and changing the graphics preset in the game from 6(highest) to 1(lowest) gives me like +5 fps avg. (Which in fact is like 40% fps gain; from 10 to 14 that is. - Yes, when I'm not alone I have like 10 fps [MMO, hell yeah, be alone]).

As I mentioned, I just returned from a break and before, I had an i5-2500k. I'm not a hardware genius, but I know that the two can't even be compared in performance, but here I am, asking You if I should buy an FX-6300 (highest price I'd be willing to pay for an AMD) or an i5-2400(-ish) non-K CPU (short on money atm., maybe upgrading later...).

On the TERA forums I keep hearing that the game doesn't really like AMD CPUs, but my friend's PC with a 3rd gen i3 has higher fps with my vga in BF3, which is an AMD game. Strange. Now what...? :(

Are Vishera CPUs that much of a gain in performance for TERA (and gaming in general) that I should choose an FX-6300 over an i5-2400?

Thank you for your patience,
Martin

My 960t at 3.7Ghz only had trouble in cities if i remember correctly. Out in the open, i could crank up the preset to 6 with my 6870 at 1080p, and have no problems. Sadly i don't think its worth investing money into a new mobo and cpu, just for TERA. Every online game is picky about cpu's i find, so i think the 6300 is a good choice. It is a great cpu for the $110 price tag (I think its that price).

Thank you both for your answers.

Investing into an Intel CPU and mobo wouldn't be much more expensive than just buying an FX-6300, since I'd buy them second hand and would sell the current ones. That is the only reason I'm even considering it.

Switching from AMD to Intel wouldn't just be for TERA (although - almost - every PVP and PVE situation includes a lot of players - imagine it like being in a city or worse) but, I play MMOs most of the time and maybe they all need a "better" (read: Intel) CPU?

As for overclocking the current 955BE... Sadly, mine is a lazy one and doesn't like to overdo things. :) 3.6GHz is the highest I could reach. Not that much, even in 3DMark.

I would only buy the 6300 if it would run TERA smoothly, even in crowded situations. What do you think?

Could you borrow one from a friend? Buying a used cpu is not much cheaper then the new counterpart, and you take risks with used gear, especially if their is no warranty. Also Piledriver overclocks extremely well, usually around 4.5Ghz or more.
