Why do some games disable 2nd monitor?

I have a 2nd monitor that I like to keep open for obvious reasons when gaming. But some games cause the 2nd display to blank when they run. Any way around that?

Both are connected DVI.

In game setting set display to windowed.

Thanks for the reply. But SLI won't function in a Window, will it? Or is that just CF.

I use sli - works fine - I have 2 24" monitors and 1 30" I use 2 24s for gaming - one for game in windows mode and the other for TS & afterburner.
