Hello,

What do you guys think of using a FreeNas on a z87-HD3 motherboard with 4 * 1TB drives and 16GB of RAM for a network of 5 users to backup data too and share data.

I can get a fairly decent processor, but maybe i need a mobo for AMD as they can have 6 cores?

Sweet nice to know i can reduce the cost. I want to allow 5 users to read and write all at the same time. So as it is just serving ill probs get away with it. Maybe 16gb is OTT too? I just dont want people complaining it is slow.

5 users in house or over the internet?
5 users in house on a gigabit network could generate 500MB/s bandwidth if they were all on seperate branches (each had their own GB connection to the server) and would need a heft disk array to accomplish that. The processor is still not a concern until you have it running applications.

5 internet users would probably not be an issue even for a single harddrive; depending on their/your broadband package.

As for the ram, if you plan on using ZFS and I recommend you do, then 16gb is fine and probably perfect for your setup. I would not recommend less than 8. ZFS can be a memory hog.

Im looking for 5 users inhouse and with possible expansion in a few years time. I will need to connect over the internet to it. The server will only have a 1mbps connx as that is all the ISP can physically give. I need the Hardware space as they store alot of stuff .

Would it be possible to make it that if the HDD run out of space that i can just extend the space with them using an expansion card for ports, then i can just plug in another 4 drives giving them more space and configuring the software to see them as extended drives?

Cheers

I have just gotta shop around for some components. Can i have the full spec of your NAS. I was maybe looking at using Molex to sata connx for PSU. Did you do the same or get a PSU for many sata but more than 6 i would have to get one custom built?

Hello,
The current spec for my chosen setup are as follows so far, from newegg.com. I have kept the same supplier to keep sourcing simple if something goes wrong with the build:
HardDrives
Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

I chose these for the space and future space as the folks like to download and share lots of manuals. The HDD also have the fit purpose for 24/7 uptime.

The mobo goes with the case and easy access door with a PSU. The board has 10 sata conn and the case will be able to get me another 4 drives in the future.

TOTAL COST: $1,224.85.

I like that the mobo and case come together with a discount and the ram and disk space can be upgraded in the future.

They are also giving a free LG-Ericsson WBR-5050 IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab WirelessN Dual-Band Broadband Gigabit Router
Item #: N82E16833218027
Return Policy: Standard Return Policy

I think this has potential, i am still deciding. The memory does not say it has ECC.

Oh wow! that is lots of dough :)

You can do much less and has a bandwidth of 2000Mb/s instead.

1st Use OpenFiler if clients are Windows, it has very good SMB protocol
2nd get a built-in CPU MB with Dual Intel NIC , like MiniITX SuperMicroBard
3rd Avoid Realtek NIC, it's good but not the BEST
You can use ANY HDD including GREEN drives
This case you have an option of double the bandwidth and failed safe teaming/bonding mode

This will BEAT or equivalent ANY commercial NAS out there
If you need how to... let me know

My server
CPU : AMD AthlonII x2 240 - I had it spare.
Mobo: Biostar Ta870U3+ - $50 on newegg shellshocker special
Ram : 8gb (2x4gb) Corsair low profile 1600ddr3 - ~$80 I think
Case - an old server case I had
PSU - Seasonic 350w ss350et - $40 I think it was, on sale at newegg
HDD Storage - Four 2tb drives Two are samsung F4's I think I paid $80 for them. The other 2 were WD Green's that I grabbed just before the great flood at $50 each. They were originally the 'ears' version but now they are the ezrx version.
HDD OS - Boot Drive 160gb WD drive I had spare. OS Backup Drive: 320gb WD Drive I had spare

So maybe $600 If I had to pay for all of it (case, cpu...)

As for your build. The i5 650 is not going to fit into that motherbd; the socket is incorrect. For that motherbd you will need a haswell based cpu such as the dual core G3220
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116950

You also don't need gaming ram in your server. You wont be overclocking. That haswell support ddr3-1333 so just vanilla quality ram will work well; such as these corsairs at $111 for 16gb

*the increased drive size warrants the increase in memory size. Two 8gb modules leaves you room to grow also.

Hey guys,

Thanx for addressing the issues. The budget of $1200 is not to steep (I have it as a maximum spend) believe it or not but the advice on overclocking I probably should not of chose them for that as I void warranties possibly. I do think I have started of with wrong board and gone for simplicity over value. If I choose a mobo like you guys I can get away with less spending. The hard drives I chose had a warranty for the 24/7 uptime for 3 years (I know other HDD can be as good but liked the guarantee), I did not choose them for all the other silly features and I liked the size.

Thanks for sharing specs. I definitely feel I was going for the wrong direction with CPU and MOBO in terms of NAS, as the power is not need, just if I was to put support potentially 5-15 people in the future it could adapt. But then if I choose a CPU and MOBO that is less than expectation I will have to spend more money. Never had a NAs before other than an old PC running FreeNAS.

I think I am trying to reach a broad number of needs. I think if I go for another MOBO and CPU I am probably better of in terms of NAS, considering I can probably get away with it for 2 years and then just keep it for dedicated account backups and log books rather than many people sharing files.

Ill start with another approach and see what I can find.

Cheers,

AirTech

Oh thanx for noticing that I put the wrong CPU in the basket that's a LGA 1156 socket CPU my bad TYVM!
