Smart error - should I panic?

Hi,

I have a 750GB seagate drive that is a few years old. Recently, I got a pop up message by Intel monitor due to a SMART error (05) on the drive. Apparently, the drive has exceeded the reallocated sector count threshold (35) and the count is now 36.
I also had a notification from windows indicating that I should enter a panic mode, and avoid using the computer until finding a replacement.
My question is, should I really avoid using the computer? Or is it just a normal wear?
I can't replace my hard drive in the few coming days. Will it last for a week or two?

Best,

I'd backup your data immediately. You can run CHKDSK C: /f /r and Windows will attempt to remap around the bad sectors but the drive will die. A friend's 750Gb Seagate drive just died and he lost everything.

Your best bet is to back up anything you need off that drive. If you avoid using it you could lengthen the amount of time it has, but the time IS limited. You can still use it, but just be aware that any information you put on the drive could get corrupted or the drive itself could die and you could lose that data forever or pay tons of money to get it back. There's no way to determine how long you have. It could work for years or it could die the next time you run it but be aware even if it does work you could run into problems like your desktop won't load or data mysteriously disappears. With OS's being far more complex your OS could be rendered useless in an instant by continuing to use a bad hard drive causing you to do system repairs or a full re installation of the OS which could even then run into problems at any point. It's like trying to use a battery to start your car that constantly needs jumping. It's best to just replace the drive.
