I currently have the ASRock 970 EXTREME3 mobo with the AMD FX-8350 cpu. Don't worry about other things like gpu or ram as i intend to upgrade that to the max, but just want to know that, is my mobo and cpu good for only gaming?

It's certainly acceptable.
I have an ASUS M5A97 EVO with a FX-4170 (roughly the same speed, half the cores) and that does fine for me.
It'll be great.
Although AMDs aren't the best at gaming, they still very much hold their own against more expensive Intel cores and do an excellent job, while still being a fantastic deal.
I have a FX-8350 based rig and it does great for any game I have played. It has no problems keeping up with my i5 3570K with no problems.
