Approximate Purchase Date: e.g.: this week

Budget Range: (e.g.: 300-400) 1000-1500

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, web surfing, work,

Are you buying a monitor: not at first but will upgrade later

Do you need to buy OS: No

Please note that if you're using an OEM license of Windows, you will need a new one when buying a new motherboard.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: no preference

Location: USA-TX

Parts Preferences: intel

Overclocking: why not...

SLI or Crossfire: maybe in the future

Additional Comments: the wow effect is a plus but not necessary, upgradeable would be nice, water cooling would be cool, and probably helpful

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: My Alienware laptop finally gave out on me, replace the motherboard just so it could go out again a few weeks later. RIP.

Any advice would be helpful. I pieced together something from a few threads and youtube videos. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1AuDf let me know what changes should be made

thanks
BR

First change I made was from Ivy Bridge to Haswell i5s, there isn't a huge difference but can't hurt to have the newer tech. Next I changed the motherboard because I have heard that MSI has the highest failure rate when OC'd. I also have the same motherboard/CPU combo as I suggested.

I swapped your RAM for a cheaper set, if you prefer Corsair than you can just change it back. If your only using this for gaming, I would suggest going with 8GB instead of 16GB because gaming doesn't need any more than 8.

I swapped the 660ti because the 7970 is a better card and is a bit cheaper. If you prefer Nvidia, go with a 760 or 770 but 7970 is best bang for your buck and will max pretty much anything that isn't crysis 3.

I upgraded your PSU to an 850w to support the potential SLI/Crossfire.

For the most part, optical drives are best chosen by price. LG, Lite-On, Asus, Samsung etc. Usually have at least one for $15. Unless you have one that you want for a specific reason, they are all good choices.

If you don't mind getting black, the Storm Scout 2 Advanced is $10 cheaper and I believe it comes with an extra fan. http://newegg.com/Product/index?itemNumber=N82E16811119...

thanks for the advice. I figured some of the items I used were dated a little. I dropped my ram down to 8GB, at the time I figured eh why not lol. I really don't have a preference on video cards so I guess ill go with what you suggested unless someone can convince me otherwise, being able to water cool the GPU would be a plus but it is what it is. Thanks for catching the PSU, that would have sucked in the future. and again with the optical drive, I was just getting click happy. here are the updated changes. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1AAOv

if anyone has any other input, I would love to hear it. I'm wanting to pull the trigger on this pretty soon.

thanks

I did not notice all the sales on the case last night... that's a great deal haha.

You can water cool any GPU as far as I know, you just have to build a custom loop system. I believe that you replace the heat sink that comes with the card and add a water block but I don't actually know. Water cooling isn't really necessary though, and I picked the gigabyte 7970 because it comes with 3 fans and should cool well.

I would research Custom Loops if its something your interested in, they can look pretty cool :D
