I'm looking to update the gpu in my gaming PC. I plan on hooking it up to my tv and using it with Steam's big screen mode. I'd like to know what is the best graphics card I can get for 1080p gaming. The thing is that since I know I will never be going over the 1080p resolution I'd like to know at what point does a cars become overkill for that resolution.

Whatever I choose needs to last me a year or two. After that I'll probably build a new PC from scratch. I'd like to be able to play any current games and any upcoming game at quality levels that will compare with the xbox one and/or the ps4.

In order to get the same graphics that the PS4 and Xbox ONE will have you'll need a 7970, which right now if you get the Sapphire 7970 Dual-X OC and overclock...

I would recommend a Nvidia GTX 760 or AMD 7950 if you want to buy today and get best bang for buck vs performance at 1080p with all the graphics on high or maxed.

Anything higher (GTX 770 or AMD 7970) you will see minor improvements for the special effects on higher such as AA, FXAA, etc. But I can`t justify the performance vs price but that would come down to your budget.

If you can wait a couple months AMD will be coming out with the 8000 (rumored for October launch) and Nvidia will be soon to follow. That would be based on what your time frame is though of course.

In order to get the same graphics that the PS4 and Xbox ONE will have you'll need a 7970, which right now if you get the Sapphire 7970 Dual-X OC and overclock it just a bit, is VERY good price/performance. You can get it anywhere from $300-$340 before a $20 MIR depending on the day, whereas a 7950 is anywhere from $230-$270
