Computer freezes and unfreezes randomly

Hey there!

I've been using these forums a lot for computer help recently but I can't seen to figure out my newest problem. Currently, my computer will randomly freeze for about 10-20 seconds and then unfreeze and continue as if nothing happened.

My System:

- MSI 970A-G46 AMD Motherboard
- AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 3.6GHz Quad-Core Desktop Processor
- Antec VP-450 450W ATX 12V v2.3 Power Supply
- Radeon HD 6670
- Seagate Barracuda 3TB HDD (Running in UEFI BIOS)
- 4 (2GB) sticks of RAM

Whenever I monitor my computer and look at temperatures, they are usually well below what they should be. My CPU and RAM usage are also low when the freezing occurs. In fact the computer froze while I was running BurnInTest and the test still came out with no errors. The tests were on everything but the optical drive, network, and printer. I also ran memtest86+ with no errors.

At this point I am at a complete loss as to what the problem could be. I would really like to fix it without having to do a clean install. I was thinking that it could be PSU related but I have no idea. I suppose it could also be a software issue, but I haven't heard of any programs that would cause this type of problem.

Thanks in advance for any help,
kennethr127

I am running Avira as my antivirus and ZoneAlarm as my firewall.

Disable zone alarm and see if the problem stops, I had nothing but system slowdowns and problems when I originally used it.

See if this helps if not disable Avira aswell.

Thanks for such quick replies guys! I will try running a full scan of my computer and then try disabling ZoneAlarm and Avira as well.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you guys, but I tried disabling both ZoneAlarm and Avira but the problem persisted. However, I was running some programs and I noticed that the issue seems to be that the computer is not freezing but that the programs that are being used at the time are simply going in a "Not Responding" state for some reason. Any ideas?

I also ran a full computer scan with both ZoneAlarm and Avira to check for virus and both were clean.

I have the exact same problem as you do, and , interestingly , i also have a MSI 970A-G46 AMD Motherboard and an fx6300 processor (same family , just more cores) . Ive tested all of my components, and my Motherboard and Processor are the only ones i haven't tested yet . I've done everything i could think of , bios update, driver updates, i've tested the ram, hdd and the graphics card on different computers, (they all passed the inspection), i've even changed my friggin sata cables , because i read that bending them at a right angle may prevent data loss .

My freezez usually occur when i'm stressing my pc. For example, if im downloading something via uT , and watching a movie at the same time, the video freezez , and the audio loops about 10 seconds worth of sound , for about 1 minute max.

I noticed that this thread has been dead for a while now, but if by any chance u see this, and if u have figured out what the problem is, please shoot a pm my way.
Fyi i googled you and found u on steam and sent u an friend request (im not a stalker or anything, it's just that this problem ive been having is driving me insane)

Hey pitagora2050,

Unfortunately I never truly isolated what the problem was in order to fix it. However, I upgraded to windows 8 on the same computer and the problem went away. So the problem was definitely a software issue. It must be a bad combination of installed programs or something. That is my guess anyways...... Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Good luck with fixing the issue!

Hey, i apreciate the reply man, unfortunately i've tried switching from windows 7 , to windows 8, to windows 8.1 but the freezes continued to occur, even imediately after a clean install. For example just a minute ago the damn thing froze while i was watching a movie and playing friggin candycrush, hardly stressfull operations for my pc if u ask me . All of my hardware is relatively new, i know for sure that the hdd, video card or ram aren't causing the freezes, that just leaves some sort of program incompatabilty, or maybe some bios settings i've overlooked. If u have the time , could u send me some pics of your bios settings? (we have the same mobo, so i figure, maybe the key is in there somehow). Also, did the freezes u encountered occur randomly, like , while doing nothing at all on your pc ?
I've managed to isolate at least a few sequences of events that lead up to a freeze . For example, downloading something @ high speed and atempting to watch a movie, playing pretty much any java-related browser game while watching a movie, or (and this is the most annoying) , simply atempting to open an mkv file sometime causes a freeze.

I'm kind of late to this thread but I'm having the same issues. I've got the MSI 970A-G43, It's very, very similar to the G46. With the FX 6300. My temps are all perfect, under full load I top out at 45c on my CPU. I get the random freezes then it picks up like nothing happened. I've had it do it on fresh installs before any software at all had been installed. The best I can figure out is that these cheap MSI motherboards are just plain bad. I've tested all my other hardware, even with other systems and everything else is fine.

I'm currently testing the board with an AMD AthlonII 250 and another set of ram, I am 100% sure that both the ram and processor work perfectly. The board is still freezing.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only person with this issue.
