Hello, first time posting here, long time lurker.

Firstly I've gone through the sticky'd checklist and have yet to solve this one (though the implications that a part of the board is fried is looming ever closer)

I recently purchased:
ASUS z87-a
Intel i5 4670k
Kingston hyperX 16g kit (2 sticks)
Cooler Master HAF gaming case
Corsair Neutron SSD

I brought these components from my old PC
EVGA GeForce gtx 560
OCZ 700W modular power supply
2 Hitachi HDD 1TB ea.
1 Seagate HDD 1TB

Here's what happens:
When the computer does boot, it runs like a dream. No errors, no BSODs, CPU temperature is at about 35C (give or take), and cpu intensive games are running perfectly well.

When it doesn't boot, the CPU_LED light will stay on and red, all fans including cpu will activate and even the hard drives will start spinning up as if getting ready to boot. It just won't move past it.

Usually, if I shut it down and start it back up again it'll boot. Other times, it'll fail to boot a few times, and others it'll even boot successfully 5 maybe 6 times in a row.

It seems completely random.

Today I'm leaving the PC on all day to see if it'll crash or randomly restart, but I'm suspecting it won't (unless windows update kicks in).

Another detail I should add is that my 8pin mobo connector wasn't long enough and i had to purchase an 8-pin extension for it.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

Hi alexoiu, I'll be able to grab one from another PC tonight and do a test to rule it out. I'm also planning on using the current power supply without the extension (not a permanent solution of course, since the power supply must sit on the bottom of the case). This will hopefully rule out a faulty extension cable for the 8-pin mobo cable.

More to follow.

I almost have the same thing going on, sent it back to the store for them to check.
They replaced the power supply, tested the board, they can't seem to replicate my problem.

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2306187/asus-z87-cpu-led-red-light-cold-boot.html

When it got back (the rig with the new power supply) it was ok for a while but it started happening again.
I requested RMA on the board, can't seem to find the solution to this problem.

Sent the board for RMA again, got a different brand

When I saw these boards the "solid caps" drew my eye. I've been repairing electronics for 40 years. I thought wow solid caps should last for a couple decades. They are not what we in the industry refer to as a solid capacitor they are just surface mount electrolytics which have a higher failure rate than conventional electrolytics. I should have sent the board back right away. Asus hasn't made a clunker in their history, at least not till now, I thought maybe it will be ok. This is my recommendation to anyone else with this board cut your loses and buy a different brand or model anyway. Beware of any motherboard using surface mount electrolytic caps. They won't hold up. This will be the first Asus board I've ever had an early failure with. Typing this on an 11 year old Asus P4. Hope this is not a sign of things to come with the company.
