I have recently added a new motherboard to my computer only to find out that my PSU is not sufficient. I have another older power supply laying around and I am wondering how I could put it to good use. Should I buy an adapter to do the trick or try cutting the green and grey wires?

"Safer" is using known good parts. You have an "older power supply laying around". Condition - unknown. Using it may well kill the rest of your system, or worse.
Even worse is trying to use it in some odd dual-PSU configuration.

Do not do this.
