If your using Windows 7 you need to Partition the disk 1st before you format it. you need to open Windows 7 Disk Management from the Computer Management utility. If your not sure how to get there go to Control Panel select Administrative Tools. Then double-click on the Computer Management icon. When Computer Management opens, click on Disk Management on the left side of the window, located under Storage. With Disk Management open, locate the hard drive you want to partition from the graphical drive map on the bottom half of the screen. Since the hard drive is brand new, it will probably be on a dedicated row labeled Disk 1, or some number other than zero, and say Unallocated. Right click on it and create a simple volume. A wizard program should pop up to help you do this. You can put all in the partition if you want. Then after that is done the wizard will apply a drive letter. You can change this if you want but it's easier to just accept what it gives you. Once that is done you should have the option to format the drive. I'd just do the quick format since this is for data. When your done it show a a health partition and you should be good to go.
