After a week of research and changing my mind from the 650ti boost to the 7950....and now 760 or 7970? I'm at a loss and need some professional help…and advice. (Since the psychologist has a wait, I’ll look for some advice here =))

My current gaming demands are fairly low and may or may not change. I play WoW, League of Legends, and some SC2. As for my displays…I game on a 27" 1080p monitor with a secondary monitor for web browsing. I’m usually playing online for 4-6hrs per day and I’m looking at a budget of < $350USD.

Current computer specs:
Dell XPS 9100
i7 930 @ 2.80ghz
6GB Ram Win 7 64bit
Radeon 6450 (Current card)

So pretty much any card I put in there, I’m going to see a big improvement. My dilemma is, do I get the biggest baddest card for the money, with the hope to use it in my next computer? Or do I stick with something like a 650ti boost or 7950 and get a new card in 1-2 years, when I get my new computer? Heat is an issue in my room, so I would really prefer a cooler running gpu. My other thought is that it seems all of the current cards are older technology. Would it really be worth it to spend $300 on a card that may or may not be relevant in 1-2 years? One other thought is that I can go with a cheaper card, and double my cpu ram to 12gb.

Thank you, I appreciate your insight/time.

670 or 7950. 760 is weaker than both. Get an Gigabyte Windforce version or an Asus DirectCU. Some MSI also good. The cheapest will probably be enough. The 670 or 760 with 680 design board is better for low temp's. Example: Gigabyte GTX 760 WindForce OC 2 GB. My 2 cent is get an Gigabyte 7850 OC 'WindForce x2 and save the money for beer. http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4155#ov

That's kind of what I was thinking. I really don't plan to OC anything...trying to keep the temps down and it seems the more I tinker, the more I break.

The improvement from anything I throw in there will probably be so vastly better I won't care.

Thanks for the reply.

For what you play, an HD7850 is more than enough. when time comes again, upgrade again to an 8850 or an GTX860... my HD5850 can still play Crysis 3, Bioshock Infinite... at 1080p WITHOUT AA or motion blur... not at max but i dont complain. next year will deserve to retire. i dont see the point for it at 1080p. It's not a quantum leap to go for an 760 or an 7950 as far as i see it. If it was an 780 or even an 770/680... well that makes me want to upgrade a bit more... but then a 1440p monitor? triple setup? If you stick with that 27# 1080p screen dont waste your money.

I am running a GTX 680 at present. I like the 7970 and should you get it, go with Sapphire. They seem to put out a good AMD card and I have used them in the past ( I'm not a fanboy of one or the other ). Not sure of what PSU came in the Dell 9100, but is something you need to be aware of as in having enough. I suspect there is some airflow issues with that Dell case and I don't know what the fan options are.

Thanks again for all of the info.

Coastie, from what I've been able to decipher, it's a 525w psu. Unfortunately I do not know the manufacturer, it's likely whatever Dell was using at the time. Ahh... soooo many choices and truly there's not a big enough $$$ or performance difference to make my decision.

Normally Dell PSU's are very good (many are Delta units) and if anything underrated. I do not think you have to worry about the PSU.

Probably not. The XPS 9100 was a top of the line rig, so I don't think they would have skimped there.

Hmmm... think I've decided on Sapphire 7870. It's $170 after a $15 rebate (Amazon shows it's too late, but on Newegg, I have till the 15th). I can get an inexpensive 7950, but a decent one would probably run $225ish and to me, the performance increase wouldn't justify the price difference.

Thank you all for the help!! Then in 1 year, I won't feel so bad about buying a new card.

Smart move and a massive upgrade from your 6450.

Yeah. The difference will be noticible for sure.
