I am looking to upgrade my current system. I run on air cooling, it's a dark knight xigmatek fan so I plan to keep this for the new build. My Question is are there any suggestions for me that could save me money from my current plan on purchasing the SABERTOOTH 990FX/GEN3 R2.0.

Overclocking is what I will be doing and I want to push it as far as I can with my air cooled setup. is this board too overkill for air only OC'ing?

current specs:-
955BE phenom x4 @ 4.0ghz stock volt
7970 Radeon
G54 gigabyte mobo
16gb 1600 Ballistix

Potential Upgrade to :-
FX8350
SABERTOOTH 990FX/GEN3 R2.0

SABERTOOTH 990FX/GEN3 R2.0

That's what I'm running with a Phanteks Big Air Cooler

I think you can get excellent OC's with an ASUS M5A97 R2.0 [ or the EVO model which is even better if its available to you ]

The performance is identical to the 990 in the sabertooth

The 990 FX Sabertooth has more power phases , making it better for overclocking.

Power phases are a marketing scam mostly

I have an Asrock 970 Extreme4 with a puny 4+1 power phases and have no problem at all hitting 4.9 GHz with my FX 6300 under a Scythe Ninja cooler .
IMO the cooling on the VRM's is the issue not the power phases which will give you tiny improvements at best

My other board is an Asrock 990 FX Extreme 9.

12 + 2 Power Phases

FX8350 \ 5.1GHZ. \ 1.384 VOLTS

Phanteks PH-TC14PE with Scythe Slipstream 110 CFM fans attached.

With the Xigmatek Dark Knight as a cooler there is no reason to buy a very top end board IMO . The cooler will be the limit , not the power phases or chipsets

True , the Phanteks is a far superior cooler.

That is why I thought I would ask the question that, due to my cooler (that I really don't want to spend more money to upgrade) is there a better option than the one above stated.

I was looking at the 990FX extreme3 and recieved mixed reviews on whether or not I should get that board when considering overclocking
