MB: Asus M3A78-EM
Vista
bought a new HD 6450 GPU to be able to run 3 monitors, no gaming, just office stuff.

Is it true that Vista won't support two video cards?

Tried to "enable" in BIOS, but got BSOD. Put back to AUTO, no issues booting up...have HD 6450 video, but onboard disappeared. Onboard will work if HD6450 is removed from MB... Asus tech said my MB was good to go with the HD6450... is it a Vista problem?? Switch to Win7? Ugh!

frustrating...
thanks.

Tradesman1,

I'll look again... the 6450 has the DVI and HDMI and VGA options. I can get two to run off of that card (any combo), but not a third as I can't run DVI and HDMI at same time. I'll try it again when I get home in the morning...going to remove the AMD Engine software and the GPU, reinstall the ATI Catalyst and get the Onboard working again and start over from there. Kickin my butt...

Thanks for your time.

hey again..
did as described, reinstalled ATI Catalyst vs. the AMD Catalyst Engine which came with the new card. Got back to two working off of onboard card, all good.

Bottom line, I've tried everything I've read about, used the manual...can't get both to work in parallel.

Funny thing...I sit at work, looking at 14 screens. Didn't dawn on me that the very machine I'm using has 2 monitors via a DVI splitter cable and it works fine...so I'm thinking I grab one from work, try to hook the 2 monitors to the splitter, and hook the other to the VGA on the new card...

I was thinking a splitter couldn't enable the two screens to show different things...but this one does, so there's hope...

The manual, the website all state that the M3A78-EM can run parallel with an additional video, and it's only possible using Vista...so I'm lost on that whole thing for now...but I'll give the splitter a try and see where it goes.

slow, yes...but can turn on you in a heartbeat. let's hope not.

currently, addressing the lost .dll during the install of the HD6450 software (GPU Tweak), and missing AMD driver from the same install. Wierd. Have a guy here with me who builds them..he's in on a extra shift, thus the reason I ran home...figure I need all the help I can get!

Currently have a DVI and VGA off of new card, DVI off of onboard. Still not seeing the onboard..

Fun times...

Now, when trying to start either ATI Catalyst or AMD Engine, can't detect driver no matter if installed from CD or the Net. Bizarre.

I don't get it. I knew I was asking for trouble. All for a stupid 3rd monitor to watch the markets.

Going back to basics...onboard video, fresh install of Vista and explore options. Maybe a new MB, built to handle multiple displays...not sure.

I thank you for your responses...I'll be sure to keep in touch, and if you have any suggestions for something that will allow me the 3 monitors, I'm all ears!

was looking at this: http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1086&pid=1414&psn=&lid=1&leg=0

two DVI hookups, plus a DVI to HDMI adapter for 3 DVI connections. Uses PCIe 2.1, my board supports 2.0...I'm thinkng that's still ok?

That would be stellar. Do you know if, like is happening now, the Sapphire would simply overwrite the Onboard? And if not, am I able to disable the Onboard via the bios, if needed?

Trying to stay on a budget...already dumped a bunch on the card and new monitors...

Legenda in Aeternum
With BIOS should be able to disable, but primarily set primary graphics to PCI-E also can disable the on-board from within Win, in Device Manager, I try and remember to to so in both places as if enabled can try and share your DRAM even if you aren't using it

TM1,

After hours of driver conflicts, we downloaded the driver from the Sapphire site. Even the stuff on the CD gave us headaches.

All set. Sapphire HD 6450 Flex...fresh install of Windows 7.
2 DVI, 1 DVI w/ HDMI adapter.

3 monitors, perfect.

Can't wait to get it home and see what the two 23's and one 27 look like.

Thanks for your assistance and take care!!!
