Im about to have a PC custom built and Id like advice on what CPU I need. The PC will be used primarily for gaming and some web browsing. Not much else. Im still undecided on which GPU to get as well because Im going to have two cards in it so advise on that to if you will.

What is your budget? Your probably looking for an a quad core cpu from intel, but i cannot tell you model without you giving us your budget. You also have to make sure you get a motherboard that the cpu socket fits in. and for the gpu.... again a budget...

I generally recommend the Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition. Kidding, (unless you frequently wake up in a new Bugatti perhaps). But brand wise, Intel. I really like AMD but it looks like it's the end of the line for the FX series and Intel generally has undeniably better gaming performance. Although, if you already plan on getting two nice GPU's, I don't think an AMD FX 6300 or higher would bottleneck your FPS.

Thanks for the replies so far guys! The total im willing to spend will be somewhere around $2000. Maybe a little more or a little less. Im really looking into something from http://www.digitalstormonline.com or http://www.cyberpowerpc.com or maybe even http://www.alienware.com. With Alienware rigs all they sell are the quad core and 6 core INTEL chipsets and I dont know a thing about the latest intel or even AMD chips. I know a very little bit on AMD. I do know that some 4 cores are faster than 6 cores and vice versa but I still dont understand why or how. Anyways Ive always been a fan of AMD since they first came out and have always bought and had very good experiences with them even when they are overclocked. I havent owned an intel since the 400MHz Pentium days. Also Ive never owned an ATI GPU. Ive always bought NVIDIA cards. I would kinda like to stick with AMD and NVIDIA but if the others are faster Im willing to try them. So with all of that info what would you guys suggest? If Im paying that much for a good rig the things going to have to last me at least longer than what I have now has lasted me and its 4 years old and still pretty strong so lets say its gotta last a good 5-6 years of gaming goodness.

First of all, dont turn to alienware. They are not very reliable in MANY ways. I recomend buying the parts and building it yourself. On paper AMD has more cores and more GHZ but in every test Intel outperforms AMD. I seriously recomend an intel quad core. Remember that clock speed and cores are not all that matter... read some reviews. If you need help picking parts use pc part picker. For you I think this CPU would work well.

Intel Solution: Intel Core i5-3570K Quad-Core Processor 3.4 GHz 4 Core LGA 1155

AMD Solution: AMD FD6350FRHKBOX FX-6350 FX-Series 6-Core Black Edition

Again I strongly recomend intel! Have a nice build!

Somebody pointed me to this this little gem... Intel Xeon 1230 v2 (make sure it's the v2). It's an Ivy Bridge core i7 without integrated graphics, so since you're already getting a GPU, it's just a core i7 with a $50 discount. But if you've got $2k to spend, then by all means "ball out". You could easily get some of the best components you can find and stay within budget.

While I agree on the building of the own pc, I disagree that Intel is the way to go hands down. In pure gaming Intel has the edge, in games that are cpu intensive however such as Battlefield or Planetside AMD takes the advantage with the FX-8350. If you are doing any sort of video work/designing AMD is the way to go, its also the best budget choice as well. 8 cores will push you further into next gen games, as well as providing some future proofing as the AM3+ socket has some life to it.
