Hi guys,

Just built a computer for a friend, and they want their old computer to go to their niece. However, this computer is by today's standards a dinosaur, so I told them I would seriously have to upgrade it if they wanted to make it an everyday use computer.

This is it:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c00245801&lang=en&cc=us&taskId=101&prodSeriesId=450204&prodTypeId=12454

It's just as you'd suspect for an old computer. Freezes for 15 minutes once you boot it up, and still runs slow after that. I was thinking about getting a bigger hard drive and memory, but the hard drive is IDE and the max supported RAM is 1GB DDR1. There really is no room for upgrade. I would have to get a new processor, motherboard, and hard drive, maybe even a new power supply depending on the wattage and a new disk drive if I can't find a Sata female to IDE male adaptor for the disk drive.

Currently, what is the cheapest newer cpu (with integrated graphics) that I can get for everyday use with Windows 7? Nothing more, it's for a kid, so we want to be as cheap as possible. I'm looking at both Intel and AMD. Do you think I would need a new power supply as well? And is there an adapter that plugs right into the back of an IDE drive, that I can plug SATA into on the other end? So far I've seen either external or PCI-E drives that do this.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Well that is what I'm going to be doing anyway. I'm just keeping the case, the power supply if it has enough wattage, and the CD drive if I can find an adaptor. It's for a kid, so they just wanted to upgrade it to make this computer useable again. I realize have to do a little more than that to get it up to speed, but I'm sure they would like to save as much money as they possibly can with this.

Honestly, with the cost of an OS, it will be much cheaper to buy a new PC. You will need a new PSU and the case might not even be reusable. The adapter will cost as much as a new DVD drive. You will also need a new HDD. Add that to the new CPU/motherboard/RAm and you have a new PC. It will cost substantially more than buying a PC.

Just buy a new computer.

There is nothing salvageable on that you could use to make it 'better'. Replace one thing, and everything else needs to be replaced to match.
CPU, motherboard, RAM, drives, DVD, PSU, even the case. Nothing is compatible with current generation parts.

Almost any prebuilt for under $400 (as linked above) would work well in this instance.

They bought a Windows 7 Family pack knowing that I'd be upgrading their computers, so the OS is already taken care of. But that probably doesn't change anything. I'll ask them if they want to go that route then. Thanks guys.
