Sorry if this is in the wrong forum!

Ok, originally I want to build a HTPC that can handle smooth video project on 5g settings which were my original requirements (a 7770 + 3rd gen i5 meets the requirements) but as I looked more into builds I felt I may as well spend a little more cash and turn it into a gaming machine too.

I am going to be playing off a projector (1080p/60hz/16:9) so my build is designed with only maxing out 1080p/60fps. Price is a factor I would rather take inferior "stock" components and overclock them to gain performance for maximum bang to buck ratio. I will use this for the next 2+ years until 4k becomes the video standard and the price of 4k projectors comes down. This machine will be used as HTPC/Gaming and when 4k becomes the standard it will just be a HTPC.

I live in Costa Rica at the moment so I have to pay 13% tax and then shipping fees so bang to buck is really holds its meaning!

1) CPU - FX8350...I am deffo behind intel atm , their single core power is unmatched and with barely any games using more than 4 cores intel is dominating, but as more games are going to be released with ported console versions (using amd jaguar 8 core) I feel more games will use 6/8 cores where the 8350 is extremely close to i7 4770k in games such as crysis 3 which is making use of those cores, and of course the price difference of around $100 is very significant. Will be overclocked.

2) GPU - 7950 HIS ICEq boost , by all accounts the 7950 needs 50mhz extra clock speed to equal the output of a 7970 (this my be incorrect but have read it a few times now) but the HIS boost model overclocks easily to 1200mhz+ by all accounts and being $80-100 cheaper than the 7970 , having 3gb of vram and 384bit will easily allow higher resolutions to handle 4k video content and in the future CF two of these cards should be able to handle more intensive games for the next couple of years at 1080p/60fps. GPU will only be AMD, openCL is vital to my HTPC setup (and I prefer amd!)

3) RAM - 8gb (2x4gb) Corsair vengeance 1600mhz 9-9-9-24 should be fine, overclocks well ,wont be a bottle neck, pretty cheap at $65

4) SSD - Samsung 840 250gb, as OS boot drive and will install games here (wont have too many but much faster loading times for them)

5) HDD- WD digital green 3tb 5400rpm. Media storage, low power consumption, will add 3-4 more of these over time

6) Case - Any ATX tower with good airflow and can fit 3-4 case fans, 5+ 5.25" bays

7) Cooling - Originally was going to go with an accelero water or tripple fan for the 7950 but the HIS has such glowing reviews with its cooling and overclocking I think the accelero would be a waste of money. Chosing the Noctua cpu cooler over the h100i just because it has such similar results, great noise level and is $40 cheaper. Will use 3-4 noctua case fans for airflow.

8) Mboard - ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 AM3+

9) PSU- Any modular silent / quiet 650-750w

So with that in mind, do you think this build will be able to hold 60fps at 1080p on newer releases Max/ultra settings in all titles (as games are almost certainly going to be utilising more cores) and especially given I can slap another 7950 in there down the road if she starts struggling on newer releases. At the moment I have crisis 3 + BF4 in mind, not to worried about older titles maybe ill play a little tomb raider.
This build on Amazon is coming out at roughly $1.1kish , is there anywhere im over spending / under spending ? what improvements would you make?

Looks like a pretty good build but I want to keep 8 cores / multi threading with an i7 as I feel more and more games are going to be using 6/8 cores over the next year or so. The GPU also has to be AMD due to superior openCL and I think 2gb vram and 256bit would be a downgrade from the 7950's 3gb and 384bit which i suppose at 1080p doesnt matter too much but I think the 7950s ability to overclock so well and price point really makes it a solid choice for my AMD gpu

Yes now it is but in the future, no it will not be. As already proven on any application or game that uses more than 4 cores which more and more games / applications will be optimized for which is why the i5 is not an option for me its either an FX or an I7, given that the AMD architecture is going to be used for all console games , and the 8350 is so close in all crysis 3 benchmarks to the i7 4770k and $100 cheaper I think there is no reason to chose Intel.

Fair enough. Here is an adapted version then. Btw that gpu is a solid upgrade from a 7950.

Yeh I agree the psu can be reduced just gotta make sure I leave enough juice for another OC 7950, I think WD green will be fine as its purely for storing and playing 720p/1080p movies. I could get cheaper on the motherboard I agree but I am unsure which to take, this has excellent reviews for getting really high stable overclocks asus is really leading the way here. So I think PSU + Mboard could be swapped out. I think CPU to a 6300 would be too much of a downgrade for $60 and I think the 8350 represents really amazing value bang for buck with a real decent cooler and mboard for overclock which leaves me future proofed somewhat (although future proofing doesnt really exist)

I actually really like that asus motherboard you suggested, and just checked amazon they have a big discount on it so I can pick it up for $114 which is excellent :) Ok, so this is what I am thinking for my build.

CPU - FX 8350 ($180)
GPU - HIS 7950 ICEq BOOST ($274)
MB - Asus m5a99fx pro ($114)
SSD - Samsung 840 ($160)
HDD - WD green 3tb ($120)
RAM - Gskill Ripjaw 9-9-9-24 2x 4gb 1600mz ($72)
Cooling - Noctua cpu cooler ($76), 3x Noctua case fans ($54 total)

TOTAL - $1056 (£675) inc shipping , only missing case and psu which I think I can get a decent case for $50-60 and psu for $70-$100. This is all amazon and not using any voucher codes which I am sure I can find to reduce price a little bit more

What do you guys think about this as a build? overclocks really really well, should be able to handle all 1080p games at 60fps or close enough with scope to add an additional gpu should it start struggling at any point.
