So i currently have an MSI FM2-A75MA-E35 mobo and i want to add more PWM fans to my rig. Im only using the one exhaust fan that came mounted with my case. Ive heard that if you want PWM capabilities, you have to connect the PWM fan to a 4 pin header on the mobo, is this true? If i connect the fan to a 3 pin header, will the fan speeds still adjust automatically(PWM)? Please help me with that. Also, how many 4 pin and 3 pin headers does this mobo have so i know how many fans i can connect.

PS. if i buy a 4 pin hub which will give me more 4 pin headers, will each still change speeds? The hub works by connecting it to a 4 pin header on the board and gives you more ports. Click Here for the hub.

Full PC specs in signature below. Please, any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Solution
1. Yes, 4 pin is necessary for PWM.
2. They will not automatically adjust with 3 pins. They will work like regular fans.
3. Look in your mobo's manual to see how many fan headers are present. Hell, you could just look at your mobo.
4. They should work as PWMs with the hub, but they might not be able to hit as high of RPMs since the connection splits.

You can just set fan profiles for non-PWM fans, as well.

Thanks! If i get a PWM fan and connect it to a 3 pin header, will it run at max RPM or what would happen? Would i be able to control its speed via software on my pc? Also, can i control the fan speeds if i connect them to a 4 pin header only? And last, how much slower would they run if i use a hub?

It may or may not run at max, but you should be able to control the fan speeds through software. You should also be able to control them when connected to a 4 pin, though that would defeat the purpose of PWM. And I'm not sure how much slower they may run if they will run slower at all--I'm not an electrician.

Usually the only PWM header on the motherboard is for the CPU fan.

On the MSI FM2-A75MA-E35 you can use Smart Fan Control.

BIOS
Hardware Monitor
CPU Smart Fan Target - Controls CPU fan speed automatically depending on the current temperature and
to keep it with a specific range. If the current CPU temperature reaches the target
value, the smart fan function will be activated.
SYS Fan1 Control - This item allows users to select how percentage of speed for the SYSFAN1.

Im not worried about the cpu fan, i know that is PWM, I'm asking about case fans
