I just successfully over clocked my i5-4670k to 4.8GHZ at 1.275 volts on my ASUS Z87-PRo motherboard. I'm reading a lot of post online and it seems people are having trouble even getting above 4.3GHz. I am fairly new to all of this so I am just worried I did something wrong or is this just beginner's luck? What are the cons for having a high overclock and should i bring it down? Is 4.8 too high?

What are your temps? From what I can tell that's really good. (no hand-on experience with Haswell)

If it is stable and cool it is fine. Just remember to check temps.

How do you check temperatures? In my bios it says that I am at 90F and 33C

the problem most people have is temperature. de-lidding and watercooling would be a must for 4.8ghz i would have thought.

Use third party programs like core temp, hardware monitor or speedfan.

What if i dont have my fans plugges into the mother board. I'm using a nzxt sentry-2 fan controller. will the program still read these temperatures accurately despite not having fans plugged into the mobo? I am using a noctua nh-d14 with one fan plugged into the mobo cpu fan header and the other to the fan controller.

Yes the temp sensors are on the hardware not the fans. I use core temp since I can set offset or correct the reading based on BIOS temp on startup. http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/
