Which games offer the best online multiplayer experience

I only buy Steam games if they offer multiplayer.

I know GTA 4 online is super fun but it's the only one I've tried so far.

I like open world games like GTA, first person shooters are sort of meh.

What's good out there?

TF2 and DOTA2, you don't even have to pay and both are ridiculously addictive especially if you have friends that play. DOTA in particular is quite a social game.
Natural Selection 2 is a pretty good team-based FPS.
Left 4 Dead 2 is pretty good.
Borderlands 2, nuff said.
Tribes Ascend if your a fan of gunplay at 100km/h.
