i have a evga gtx 560 ti 1gb fpb and during msi kombustor the temp reaches 84C and then starts throttling. 250 somthing mhz then back to 851mhz for a few seconds and so on

Solution
Your stress testing (Kombustor) your GPU with 100% load and your fan is not doing its job.

Gaming is unlikely to ever load a graphics card the way Kombustor does.

You yourself said it runs cooler with a different fan profile.

Running that profile through MSI AB is a small price to pay to prolong the life of your card.

The operating temperatures are reaching unsafe levels and the card backs off in an attempt to reduce load which reduces temperature.

Keep in mind while you may think '84C isnt that high to be throttling', it's still very hot.

I'm assuming you have an overclock on the card. Try lowering it.

Try adjusting your GPU fan speed profile.

Lastly, if you're using nVidia control panel, change the power management mode to maximum performance:

card is at stock clocks and ive even disasembled, cleaned and replaced thermal grease. that lowered the max temp from 87 to 84. it used to throttle at 87. if i set a custom fan graph in msi after burner it runs way cooler but i would really like to have the problem solved so i dont have to have msi afterburner running. if i close afterburner then the fan goes back to default

ok thanks. would buying a new fan possibly fix this? its just that i may try to sell my rig in the future and i dont want to have to tell him/her that they will have to run msi ab when gaming because that just sounds bad and will decrease value.

the thing is, i got temps to reduce after increasing fan speed but the throttling still occurred just at lower temps. w
