Is AM3+ a step backwards?

I'm currently running an i5 750 @ 4GHz but I was thinking of changing to AMD, it's cheaper, I didn't see any difference in terms of gaming (most games are GPU intensive and the difference between a good i5 and a FX-6300/8320 is minimal) and I will be finally geting rid of my current motherboard, which I hate so much :)

Thing is, most people say that AM3+ is an outdated platform, without PCIE 3.0, native USB 3.0, and that falls short compared to the new Z87 platform which -supossedly- has lots of improvements.

Plus, Haswell's got many new instructions that videogames will take advantage of, and when that happens, the difference between AMD and Intel will be more than huge.

So, I'm asking you:

1) Is it worth the upgrade? Or is it more of a sidegrade/downgrade/waste of money/better wait situation?

2) Is AM3+ a step backwards? Generally speaking, not from my situation. Someome that buys nowadays an AMD platform is to be considered an idiot?

I seriously don't know where AM3+ falls short compared to Z87, or even Z77.
