Is my PSU powerful enough?

Hi.

I had a GPU go out on a dell desktop I have. The old card was a Radeon HD 6800 (I think).

I went out and bought a new Asus GeForce GTX 650 TI OC and when I got home I realized the box recommends 400W with 20A on 12V rail.

I checked the PSU in the comp and it says 500W MAX and shows +12v1 16A, +12V2 17a.

Is this GPU going to be too much?

It also has a Intel i7 920. Nothing really out of the ordinary beyond that.

Solution
Yes, that is enough for a 650TI overclocked.

A Geforce GTX 660ti has a 24A and a 450W PSU minimum power requirement. The power supply has 33 amps total for both 12v rails. You can power a GTX 650 ti without any issues unless the power supply is really poor quality.

Solution
No. you will not have enough on the rail(s). Even if you had the Minimum required under certain conditions it won't be enough. That is whay I make sure I have plenty of headroom on the rails, which usually results in extreme overkill as far as PSU wattage goes. I would look for something with at least 30a on the +12v rail for that card.

He will have enough, 33 combined amps on both 12v rails. He can power one single GTX 650ti.

You're good to go, the dell power supply may not be of the best quality, but it will suffice.
