Generic Processor Help Thread

Just got a great card and power supply, only to find that the processor completely bottlenecks it.

What's the best processor I can get for a eMachines ET1831
Without the motherboard exploding?

What card did you get? Also at first glance I would say the best CPU you can get is an e8400 (or e8500,e8600).

Seems well.
All seems good besides a somewhat hard to install fan.

Ok first off just about any cpu you can get with that is going to bottleneck that HD 7800 series which I assume is a Hd 7850 or HD 7870. The Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 is probably your best bet with that particular motherboard. The E8500 is no longer manufactured but can be found used on amazon and ebay for around $40. I myself have a E8400 and it does fine with most games except games that are very CPU dependent (Battlefield 3, GTA 4).

Edit: The E8400, E8500, and E8600 are very similar in performance so it doesn't really matter which one you get.

You could get a far superior CPU with a new board cheaper ie AMD 760K or Intel Haswell Pentium G series (either under $150 for CPU and motherboard) rather than waste money on a CPU over 5 years old.

$40 for it is more like it but you need a batter CPU to keep up with a Radeon 7800 series.

I do agree with simon. I would get a LGA 1155 or LGA 1150 motherbaord myself. However for $40 the E8400 will give you a considerable boost for the time being.
