On the back of the motherboard there are 6 ports: front, rear, centre, Microphone, Line in, digital.

Well the front jack doesn't work no matter what plug to it unless I set the realteck drivers to run as a 7.1 audio system. I cant I get the front jack on the back of the motherboard to play even if I set it to stereo and plug my headphones to it. Funny thing is, a few weeks ago it worked fine. Why the sudden change?

If you are running windows 7 it has to do with the way it treats your front and rear audio ports.

For example if you have speakers plugged into the rear of the system sound will work.
But if you plug headphones into the front jacks provided on the front of the case they will not work.
This is because you have to change in windows the default device for sound playback.

Plug the headphones into the front jacks of the tower.
Then right click on the speaker icon in windows located next to the time.
select playback devices.

A window will open.
You should see speakers listed.
And headphones in the list.
Right click on headphones, select as default audio device, and they will work.
Do the same to switch back to the speakers if you also have them plugged in to get audio output back to them.

The jack on the front of your case gets it's signal from the ac97/hdstereo header located on the bottom edge of your motherboard. There should be a cable coming from the front panel of the case that has a double plug attached - one will say ac97 and the other hdstereo. Plug one of those into the motherboard header and see it that cures your problem.

I guess I didn't explain my situation well. The the jack on the front of the chase, the one made for headphones, works fine. The problem is that the rear audio port for front channel is not working. Well it works if I set the Realteck audio device to 7.1 speakers and then click on fill all, but if I set it to 5.1 or 2 speakers the front channel does nothing.

I am using windows 7 and it worked fine 2 weeks ago. I went on vacation and now it doesn't work any more.

My sound card is an integrated Realtek HD 5.1. I can not get the front 2 speakers to work as the front L/R speakers. They will only work under 7.1 as the Surround sound side speakers. Every other speaker works in its correct spot during test. Supposedly its only a 5.1 card. So why does it have a 7.1 setting on the sound setup.

I have a Realtek® ALC887 that has driver 6.0.1.6873 on directx 11.
I removed and reinstalled the realtek drivers, but nothing changed.

Do you know how to do any of this yourself, editing registery keys? I want am afraid if I do this I might mess it up and end up having to reinstall the drivers. IF possible I would like to download a already altered registery key where the front port is where the digital in used to be and vice versa.

Okay something else has happened now. I can make all the speakers work at full volume at 5.1 setup if I set it to "speakers fill" but then there is a hollow reverb sound to it. I want the speakers to just work normal when set to normal 5.1, why wont they?!?!?!!

Erm, to shame myself, I didnt realize that what looked like the green port (in the position where it usually is on most sound cards) was actually the grey and from the red lighting coming from the fans of my computer, I didn't see it wasn't green.
