3TB HD with Gigabyte GA-E7AUM-DS2H motherboard?

I recently purchased a 3TB internal hard drive to replace the 1TB HD in my HTPC. I know some version of Windows have problems recognizing the entirety of 3TB HDs, but I figured I'd be OK since I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

When I tried to install Windows on the new disk, I received an error saying "Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style." I couldn't find any way around this error message, so I ended up reformatting the drive to NTFS, thinking maybe I could keep a small NTFS partition for Windows and reformat the remainder of the drive as a second GPT partition for storage. However, it appears that I cannot reformat only part of the drive as GPT, so the system is currently not recognizing 1TB of the drive.

I'm not sure why I received the GPT installation error in the first place - is this an issue with my Gigabyte GA-E7AUM-DS2H motherboard? Does anyone have any ideas that will allow me to utilize my entire 3TB drive in this system?

Thanks in advance!

In order to boot from a HDD larger than 2TB, the drive has to be initialized using the GPT partitioning scheme, and your motherboard has to have a UEFI BIOS.

If you’re not going to use the drive as a boot drive then all that is required is that the drive be initialized using GPT.

Your motherboard does not have a UEFI BIOS so you can’t use your drive to install Windows. You can only use it as a storage drive once it has been initialized as GPT.

Thanks for the reply. I figured this was probably the problem. I looked at the most recent motherboard drivers and BIOS updates and it looks like none address this issue. Apart from purchasing a new motherboard, are there any alternatives that will allow me to utilize the full 3TB on this system?
