I built my own desktop about a year ago and I could never get a wired connection. How do I go about doing this?

Solution

Go to control panel, devices, device manager. From there, try to find network adapter and open it. Right click on your LAN device, and enable it if needed, then go to properties. Make sure the device status is working...

Do you not have a connection? Most motherboards, especially the new ones, have a LAN/Ethernet.
If your motherboard doesn't have one, you will have to buy one of these: http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/wired-network-card/

For me to help you find a wired network adapter, could you please provide your motherboard name/model.

Your motherboard seems to have a wired LAN on the back I/O panel. Did you try that?

Go to control panel, devices, device manager. From there, try to find network adapter and open it. Right click on your LAN device, and enable it if needed, then go to properties. Make sure the device status is working, and then go to the drives tab. Try to update the driver from there.
