Have an NVIDI GeForce 8600GT chip type with a NFORCE 680i LT SLI system model.

I take it the GeForce 8600 GT is the graphics card while the NFORCE 680i LT SLI is the motherboard and chip set?

Anyway I have a Intel Pentium D 3.00GHz processor and am looking to upgrade my CPU to a better more powerful one. However I don't know what I'm supposed to look for to upgrade it and what is a really good upgrade for me as an example? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Check the mobo site, under support for a cpu support list, not sure of the Brand of your mobo, but want to say most of the 680i mobos supported right up through the Q9650

Who made the the mobo - the 680i was a popular chipset, highly regarded buy OCers and gamers, Asus was the 31 maker w/ the Striker mobos, but many others put them out XFX had a good one, BFG came out with some, all the big players had the 680i SLI mobos
