Hello,

I currently have windstream for my internet connection, and I'm using the Sagemcom modem\router FAST 1704. I connected the Netgear WN3500RB Extender hoping the wifi signal would reach my jewelry studio that's approximately 50 to 100 feet from the house. The studio is a metal building - the walls are made of two sheets of metal with insulation in between the sheets. There are currently no windows in the building, but I'm going to try to add one for an air conditioner. I can get one bar on my ipad in the doorway of the studio, but no bars once I go inside or shut the door. I do have a telephone line in the studio that is shared with the house. However, I don't believe I can connect another modem\router to the phone line and still connect the house and studio to the internet at the same time. The studio has its own electrical panel, separate from the house.

I'm wondering the easiest way to get internet connection to the studio? I'm thinking of the following options, but I'm not very tech savvy, so these options could be way off:

1. I have a pool deck that is 1\2 way between the house and studio - should I get another Netgear WN3500RB Extender and hook it up under the pool deck where there's an electrical outlet? Maybe wrap some plastic around it just in case to keep is safe? Can I have two Netgear WN3500RB Extenders piggybacking off each other?

2. Should I get rid of the Sagemcom modem\router FAST 1704 and get a new one that will possibly extend the signal to the pool deck and just use one Netgear WN3500RB Extender? If so, which modem\router has the longest range? I was considering the Netgear D6200, but wasn't sure if it works with Windstream.

3. Could I hookup another router in my sunroom and run an Ethernet cord from it out the window to the studio? Would it need to be a certain type of cord and need to be buried?

4. Who would I contact that's a professional to run the cords for me underground if I choose that option - would it be Windstream?

5. I saw this on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002WCEWU8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2LM6ZPY06LT1N Alfa AWUS036H 1000mW 1W 802.11b/g USB Wireless WiFi network Adapter with 5dBi Antenna and Suction cup Window Mount dock - for Wardriving & Range Extension
Would this be a possibility with my current setup if I mounted it on the outside wall of the studio? I believe it would connect directly to my desktop computer and I wouldn't be able to use my Ipad or other wireless devices? I'm currently using a Netgear WNDA3100 USB adapter on the desktop for wireless. However, I do believe it has a wired port that I can connect directly to the desktop for internet. I will be moving the desktop computer to the studio if I can get the internet working there. I don't believe it would work with the Netgear D6200?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Yeah, switches are better. Try to avoid WiFi for every thing but the last dash. Run a cable from your modem to the studio, then put a wireless access point in there.

If there's a fence, a cable in conduit or pipe on the side of that is fine.
You'll never get WiFi into a grounded metal shed. It's effectively a Faraday cage, and will block all radio. You could put an antenna on the outside though.

Powerline might work - is the power connection run from your house, or is it two separate connections to the street?

You can only run one DSL connection per phone line.

Ethernet is probably your best option - the normal way would be to dig a trench, then lay conduit with Cat6 or Cat6a in it. Drainlayers might be able to do it, and your local electricians could probably tell you who they usually use.

You might be able to make it work using a cantenna (directional antenna made out of a can), but you won't get good signal inside.

The ethernet cable from the house to studio is your best option. Another extender won't beam through those metal walls. And one of those living outside (pool deck or outside wall of the studio)....will die a quick death, due to condensation and insects.

Thanks for your help thus far. I think I'll go with the ethernet cable from the house to studio. I want to do some more investigation, to see if this is something I can tackle on my own.

Would this cable work: http://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Waterproof-Ethernet-Direct-Shielded/dp/B002HFEBYM/ref=pd_cp_pc_2
Does the cable need to be Cat6or would Cat5e work?

Also, could I hookup two more routers to my connection? I have the initial router\modem, could I add another wireless router in another room that I would connect the ethernet cable from the house to and then have another router in the studio that the cable from the house would connect to?

Would be router\modem -wireless connection to 2nd router - 2nd router ethernet cable connected to 3rd router

Also, could I put the ethernet cable inside a water hose and run the hose along the top of my chain link fence to the studio? The cable I'm looking at says it's waterproof and weatherproof.

Instead of more routers, what you need are switches and Access Points.
