Decent Modem + Router setup?

For a long time I had a Linksys adsl modem-router all in one device to connect to the internet.

Now the unit is failing, dropping connections all the time. I checked the inside and all the chips are very hot. I put some large heat sinks and a fan on it. It worked for a while. But now it just keeps dropping connections.

The unit is 5 years old. So I don't mind buying a new one.

Now I was wondering if it is better to buy a separate modem and separate router. Most people seem to think so.

But then there seems to be very little choice in modems that don't have a router built in. Or am I wrong here? You can find some older adsl2+ modems but I need a VDSL2 capable modem that can do at least 50Mbps. (this is almost the standard speed in Belgium).

If I google I'm only getting this D-Link model which is discontinued...

Any thoughts?

Thx,
Karel.

In the US we usually get the modems from the ISP. Do you have this option? Then you have a modem provided by the ISP and your own Router. I like having 2 devices for failure. If the ISP device goes, they are responsible for replacing it.

Yeah with my isp you have to buy your own. The things they sell here are always a modem with integrated router.

I could just go out and buy one of those, disable the router function and attach it to my router.
But it just seems like a waste, I was hoping a separate modem would be less expensive. And would also overheat less.

Right now I cut out a piece of my modem enclosure and put a 90mm fan on it. It looks like crap but it sure runs cool.
