Do MMORPGs like Aion and WoW depend on Internet speed and CPU MORE?

Hi everyone,

So, I've been wondering... I just built a new system. My specs are as follows:

i5-4670K @ 4.3Ghz
MSI Radeon 7990 + Samsung 120Hz monitor
Fractal Design 800W Gold
NZXT Phantom Full Tower
Z87X-UD3H Gigabyte
G.Skill Ripjaw 2x4GB @ 1600Mhz
Samsung 840 250GB SSD

So my main questions are:

1) I think my specs are more than enough. I mainly play games like Left 4 Dead 2, Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, Aion (from NCSoft), and potentially stuff like Battlefield 4, Crysis 3. But why do I sometimes lag like crazy in games (FPS wise) in games like Starcraft 2 and Aion? Is my CPU bottlenecking my GPU? I understand that when there are 50+ users doing stuff at once would greatly decrease your FPS but not down to like 30s with a 7990?

2) Also, my internet speed is only 6Mbps. Here in Canada, internet kind of sucks. Would you guys be able to tell me if increasing my internet speed would greatly improve my FPS? (Also, I use a wireless adapter on my desktop, not ethernet cable. I can't plug in ethernet port due to spacing issues around my condo)

3) I know in specs wise (according to NCSoft's website), my system would DESTROY Aion's requirements. But the actual performance isn't what it seems like. I used to play with GTX 670 last year and I feel like I haven't upgraded at all (if anything, feel the same or a bit less).

Any insights on how to troubleshoot, and recommend on how to keep my FPS stable, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks guys,

If you are playing an online game, you can only do so much from your side to get smooth speeds all the time.

Your internet speed is plenty fast for any online game as long as your latency (ping times) are not too bad and you are not downloading or streaming HD at the same time as playing games.

The CPU should not bottleneck the card especially with that overclock speed.

This is why all those online game companies put on the box "online experience may vary", so people don't complain about slower speeds.

My ping is around 110 ms, up to 150 ish... which is kinda disturbing when I can hit 60ms on L4D2.
So it could be possible that the game itself is poorly coded? I know it uses CryEngine which is a bit outdated??

When I type /ping within the game, it tells me. So this is the direct ping I'm getting from the Aion server.

I have a 6Mbps plan with 1 Mbps, but planning to upgrade to 15 down and 10 up. Not sure if this will help...

You might have overestimated the 7990 in at least a couple of those games versus your GTX 670. A game like Aion is probably DirectX 9 and therefore subject to the Crossfire frame metering problem as well. That means that your performance is going to feel like only a single GPU, and with the jittery microstutter, probably worse. Same goes for Left4Dead2 and Diablo III. Your preferred games list doesn't really match up with the driver support of the 7990.

With your SLI capable motherboard, you probably would have been better off getting another $350 GTX 670.

Coming back to this...

Thanks for your post. I ended up changing my card (7990) to SLI GTX 770. My FPS has not changed at all, but much quieter and cooler (in some games like Crysis 3, frames are more steady).

Also, in your SC2 benchmark, a single GTX 770 should give me 80FPS? I get anywhere between 60 fo 120 with two of them... :S But then again, you mention that these games are probably based on older DirectX versions?

Note: it matters that it goes beyond 60FPS because I have 120Hz monitor

I would be looking at a bottleneck elsewhere, your resolution, CPU, or the game itself. You may also not be playing with the same settings as those used in the benchmarks.

The other thing to look for is odd settings in the NV Control Panel, like Ambient Occlusion or Transparency Antialiasing. These may be incompatible with some games and might overly impact performance. Make sure you don't have VSync Half-Refresh enabled.
